Rio de Janeiro: A “homemade bomb” exploded at a high school outside Rio de Janeiro on Friday, lightly injuring ten teenagers, the municipal government said.
The explosion of a device described in local media as a pipe filled with nails, nuts, and bolts, occurred at a school in the city of Belford Roxo and injured pupils between the ages of 13 and 15.
“An explosive device reportedly detonated in the school courtyard after being handled by a student,” the fire department said in a statement.
The teens “sustained minor injuries and are expected to be discharged within the next few hours,” the Belford Roxo city hall said in a statement.
“Classes have been suspended to ensure the safety of students and staff.”
City hall said the area was cordoned off while military police and a bomb squad conducted an investigation.
The O Globo news site said the device had been brought to the school by two students.
