Kanpur: The death toll in the Hamirpur boat tragedy reached six on Friday, with the recovery of an 11-year-old boy’s body.The bodies of five people, including four children, were recovered on Thursday, a day after their boat sank in the Yamuna River in Hamirpur.At least six people went missing after a boat carrying around nine passengers capsized on Wednesday evening while they were returning after collecting muskmelons and cucumbers from a river island.The tragedy struck Qutubpur Dera at Bhauli village in Kurara area, a day after the wedding of Raju Nishad’s daughter Anjani. Families from nearby villages had come for the function. On Wednesday, after the ‘vidaai’, nine of Raju’s relatives went by boat with Vishnu Nishad to eat cucumbers and melons across the river in the evening. However, the boat overturned mid-river.The deceased were identified as 25-year-old Brajrani, Archana, 14, Akanksha, 12, Lavyaansh, 5, Rani, 9, and Aditya, 11. While Vishnu swam to safety, divers rescued Rinku and Parul and took them to a hospital.DM Abhishek Goyal stated that Rs 4 lakh aid would be given to the family members of each deceased. Boatmen have also been instructed to keep safety equipment in their boats to prevent such incidents.On Friday morning, SDM Avichal Pratap Singh reached the home of the bereaved family. He consoled the grief-stricken relatives and assured them of all possible financial and legal assistance from the govt.
