Mumbai: A dozen Mhada layouts spread over 923 acres across the city will be undergoing redevelopment in the coming years. This will enable the rehabilitation of 75,445 residents residing in these layouts, said Sanjeev Jaiswal, vice-president and CEO, Mhada. The rehabilitation will happen in 5-10 years after construction begins, said Jaiswal. All redevelopment will be carried out through the construction and development agency, while Mhada will be the special planning authority. Speaking to the media on Friday, Jaiswal said redevelopment of some layouts was already awarded, while in some cases tenders were invited. In case of the 250-acre Charkop layout, as also the 200-acre Gorai layout, the redevelopment proposals will shortly be placed before the state cabinet for its approval, said Jaiswal. The other layouts include Majaswadi, Bandra Reclamation (98 acres), Abhyudaya Nagar (33 acres), SVP Nagar (29 acres), Versova, Ramkrishna Nagar (6 acres), Old MHB Colony, Borivali (26 acres), and Motilal Nagar (143 acres). Kamathipura is a private layout spread over 34 acres in central Mumbai, and Mhada recently appointed two realtors from Pune for its redevelopment. While slums in these layouts are also included in the redevelopment, eligible slum households being provided 300-square-foot tenements in separate buildings in the same layout, Jaiswal said in-situ slum rehab needs to be relooked at. He further said the govt, under the state housing policy, 2025, is looking to push for rental housing. “Recently we made a presentation before the govt on rental housing. Certain amendments in the Act have been proposed, and we are in the process of setting up a state rental housing portal,” he said.
