Guwahati: Assam Police detained nine suspected Bangladesh nationals in Biswanath district on Sunday, officials said.Seven of those detained are women. The arrested persons were identified as Sahara Khatun, Nurzamal Sheikh, Bijal Khatun, Akbar Ali, Champa Ful, Shahida Khatun, Fatema Khatun, Rahima Begum and Mamuni Begum.“Based on that information, we detained nine people whom we suspect are Bangladesh nationals and brought them in. We are currently verifying their identities and documents. After verification, we will proceed according to the law,” Biswanath SSP Asif Ahmed said.The operation covered Jinjia, Behali and Biswanath Chariali, where the suspects allegedly lived.“Some of them claim to have been living here for many years, but they have been identified as illegal Bangladesh nationals. We are acting in accordance with the directions issued by the chief minister,” Ahmed added.Police are verifying their family details and current locations.“In some cases, family members may have moved elsewhere for employment, while others may be living far away. Once identified and verified, those found will be caught and deported,” Ahmed said.They said those identified after due process would be deported and transferred to detention camps under govt’s standard operating procedure.“Many of them move from one place to another in search of work. Whenever the police receive information and visit a particular location to investigate, they may not be present because they have temporarily left the area in search of work. After some days have passed, they return to the same place and resume staying there,” Ahmed said.Police said the suspects lived in rented accommodation or isolated village locations.
