Panaji: A total of 8,398 Goans surrendered Indian passports after acquiring foreign nationality between 2021 and 2025, chief minister Pramod Sawant stated in a written reply in the assembly. Of these 8,398, 99.6% (8,370) acquired Portuguese passports, and the rest citizenship of US, UK, Canada, Ireland, France, Mexico, Poland, Germany, Russia, Kazakhstan, Romania, Thailand, and Tanzania.According to the data submitted, in 2021, an average of two persons a day surrendered their Indian citizenship. This number almost doubled in 2022. In 2023 and 2024, six surrendered their Indian citizenship every day. In 2025, this number dropped to almost five each day. Sawant, responding to a question by opposition MLAs Vijai Sardesai and Carlos Ferreira, said that no specific study has been done to analyse the socio-economic profile of such persons.
