Pune: A 60-year-old farmer of Purandar gave a new lease of life to four people after her family agreed to organ donation when she was declared brain-dead following a road accident.The woman and her husband were admitted to a city hospital with severe brain injuries on Feb 6. She was riding pillion with her husband, when they met with an accident. She was declared brain-dead on Sunday and the organs were harvested on Monday.The surgery took place at Noble Hospitals and Research Centre. Group executive officer Dr Sanjay Pathare said, “The lungs were sent to another hospital in Pune, one kidney to a hospital in Nashik, while the other kidney and liver were transplanted in our in-house patient on Monday.”Pathare said, “Her husband is also a farmer. He is undergoing treatment in a critical condition and is still in the ICU.” He thanked ZTCC for their valuable role in the coordination and allocation of organs.Noble Hospital director Dr Divij Mane said, “We salute the family members, including the son and daughters, who consented to the organ donation in such a difficult hour. Their selfless act helped rejuvenate the lives of those seeking transplant and their families.”The in-house kidney transplant team included head of the department of renal sciences Dr Shashikant Bhange, along with anaesthetist Dr Geetanjali Akhade and team. The liver transplant team included surgeons Dr Bipin Vibhute and Dr Smita Parakh, along with anaesthetist Dr Manish Pathak and transplant coordinators Mahesh Tupe and Ashwini Kawade.
