Cuttack: A 30-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by at least six men after they intercepted the car in which she was travelling with a male colleague on Cuttack-Chandbali road late Tuesday night, police said.Police said the woman and her colleague, both employees of a private firm in Bhubaneswar, were travelling towards Kendrapada when the accused allegedly waylaid their car on Tuesday. The men forced the duo to stop and assaulted the woman’s colleague before allegedly sexually assaulting the woman. The accused fled the spot after the incident.The victim approached police in the wee hours of Wednesday, following which a case was registered. Police said she was in a stable condition and was being provided medical treatment and counselling.Cuttack Rural SP Vinit Agrawal said, “A serious offence had been reported and a coordinated investigation is underway.”The victim approached police early Wednesday and a case was registered immediately. A DSP-rank officer has been assigned to supervise the investigation and multiple teams have been formed to identify and apprehend the accused. “We are examining every available lead and following all prescribed procedures, the accused would be arrested soon, added Agrawal.He said, “We have seized the car in which the woman and her colleague were travelling for examination and collection of evidence. A forensic team also visited the crime scene and collected physical evidence as part of the investigation.”Police teams are examining the circumstances leading up to the incident and are also working to establish the identities and movements of the accused.The incident has raised concerns over the safety of women travelling on the Cuttack-Chandbali road at night. Police said efforts were on to trace and arrest all those allegedly involved in the crime.
