Nagpur: Sudden heavy rains lashed the city on Friday evening. The downpour resulted in the uprooting of two trees at busy road stretches, disrupting traffic movement, while waterlogging was reported from two localities in the South-West assembly constituency. As per IMD, the city recorded 56.8 mm rainfall between 5.30pm and 8.30pm.The unexpected change in weather offered relief from rising temperature and humidity during the day. The downpour came on the day when the southwest monsoon withdrawal started over Rajasthan. The spell not just ended the dry spell but also helped remove monsoon deficit to some extent.The RMC upgraded its weather warning to an orange alert as gusty winds, intense heavy rains, dark clouds and persistent lightning gripped the city skies. As per IMD, the rainfall activity was a local development as no system prevails over the region.One of the trees fell on the road at Subhash Nagar T-point, while another was uprooted in Jaripatka, affecting traffic on both busy routes. Waterlogging was reported at Medical College Square and near Panchsheel Square. The downpour, coinciding with the festival, resulted in slow-moving traffic on several arterial roads as people travelled for Mahalaxmi Puja.Despite the intensity of the rain, the NMC fire and emergency services did not receive any calls regarding waterlogging at underbridges including Manish Nagar and Narendra Nagar RUBs.According to the NMC emergency services control room, four calls were received during the evening, including two related to waterlogging and two concerning fallen trees. Tree-related calls were received from Ganguly Layout in Somalwada and Indraprastha Layout on the Trimurti Nagar side, while Subhash Nagar T-point and Jaripatka also witnessed tree-falling incidents.With rainfall continuing through the evening, civic and emergency teams remained on alert, particularly at vulnerable low-lying stretches, major junctions and roads prone to waterlogging.
