GURGAON: A school safety review covering 170 govt schools in the city has described 525 rooms as “condemned” or “in bad condition”.According to official data, these schools are spread across four blocks – Farrukhnagar, Gurgaon, Pataudi and Sohna. The schools fall into five categories – demolished, declared condemned, awaiting condemnation, files pending and safe – based on the status of their unsafe rooms.Thirty-two schools have already demolished the affected rooms or structures, while 29 have been formally declared condemned and another 48 are awaiting formal condemnation.The required file has not been received from 42 schools, leaving the status of the affected structures pending, while 19 schools have reported all rooms as safe, according to the review conducted by the education department, which began last month. More schools will be covered later, as the review is still on.Overall, the school-wise figures show 119 rooms in the demolished category, 113 rooms in schools where structures have been declared condemned and 181 rooms awaiting formal condemnation.Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) district project coordinator Sudesh Raghav told TOI, “A tendering process will be initiated to remove the condemned structures, following which new classrooms and other buildings will be constructed based on requirement. The inspection of all schools is being carried out in a phased manner.”Pataudi – 26 – accounts for the largest share of schools in the “demolished” category. The block has 51 schools in the list, the highest among the four blocks.Apart from the 26 schools where affected rooms have already been demolished, six schools have been declared condemned, eight are awaiting condemnation and eight have not submitted the required file.In Gurgaon block, 47 schools figure in the list. Of these, 10 have been declared condemned, while 16 are awaiting formal condemnation. Another 17 schools have not had their files received, making this the block with the highest number of file-pending cases.Sohna, with 44 schools on the list, presents a different pattern. While 10 schools have reported all rooms as safe, 15 schools are still awaiting formal condemnation.Seventeen schools have not submitted the required file, while one school has been declared condemned and one has already demolished the affected rooms.In Farrukhnagar, 28 schools are listed. Here, 12 schools have already been declared condemned, the highest number in this category among the four blocks.
