Kendrapada: A 50-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl in Jajpur district. Police said the girl was returning home from a nearby market on Monday evening when the accused, her neighbour, dragged her to a secluded spot and raped her.On Tuesday, the girl’s mother lodged an FIR alleging the assault and stating that the accused had threatened to kill the girl if she disclosed the incident to anyone. Acting on the complaint, police arrested him, said IO Chinmayee Sahoo.The accused has been booked under Section 70(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (rape of a woman under 18 years of age) and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. Police said he has confessed to the crime.The girl was taken to a community health centre (CHC) where doctors confirmed rape during medical examination. The accused was produced in a Jajpur court on Tuesday. His bail plea was rejected and he was remanded in judicial custody, the IO added.
