Bengaluru: A warder at Central Prison, Parappana Agrahara, was attacked by five prisoners arrested in the activist Suhas Shetty murder case. The prisoners allegedly assaulted him, dragged him into a room and attempted to kill him by strangling him.According to a complaint filed by Manjunath HG, superintendent in-charge of Central Prison, the incident occurred around 10.45am on Sept 2.The injured warder, Manjunath Haveli, 32, works in the Shiksha Bandi section, which handles premature release cases. He had gone to Annex-1 jail building at 10.05am to collect information about a prisoner ahead of a videoconference scheduled for 11.30am.While there, undertrial prisoner Mohammed Musamir allegedly confronted Haveli over an earlier incident on Aug 22, when Musamir was transferred from the security division to the Annex-1 jail building and was stopped from taking additional items inside the prison.Musamir allegedly threatened Haveli before punching him in the face and nose, causing him to bleed. Four other prisoners — Abdul Safwan, Mohammed Rizwan, Nayaz and Kalandar Shafi — then allegedly joined the assault.The five prisoners are said to have dragged Haveli into room no. 4 and continued attacking him. They also squeezed his neck tightly and attempted to suffocate him. Other prison staff present at the spot intervened and rescued Haveli.Based on the complaint, Parappana Agrahara police have registered a case under various BNS sections, including attempt to murder. A senior officer said the accused were questioned Friday evening and taken into police custody after obtaining court permission.The accused were arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) following Shetty’s murder near Bajpe in Mangaluru on May 1, 2025. NIA has arrested 12 accused and filed a chargesheet against them.
