Guwahati: Personnel from Basistha police station arrested five people for allegedly stealing dogs in different parts of the city and transporting them outside Assam for illegal meat sale.The accused were identified as Rangsina Ronghang (31), Bishu Rongpi (41), Munu Rongpi (20), Waisong Teron (32), and Marcy Tokbipi (42), all residents of Karbi Anglong district. They were arrested from Karbi Anglong.“During the investigation we found that three of them were directly involved in the kidnapping, meanwhile two of them were receivers. They were responsible for transporting the dogs to the nearby northeastern states,” said Basistha PS officer-in-charge Kapil Pathak.He did not disclose the specific states where the meat was supplied, citing the ongoing probe. “There are more people involved in this racket, and we are investigating to trace them,” he said.Police said the accused carried out the activities at night by luring stray dogs with biscuits before transporting them in private vehicles. “We have recovered two vehicles so far. One bears a registration number from Kamrup (Metro) district, while the other bears a registration number from Karbi Anglong district,” Pathak said.The accused were produced before a local court on Monday and a case has been registered.Local activists following the matter alleged that a many people are involved in the racket and such incidents have been occurring across Assam. They claimed the stolen dogs are primarily trafficked for meat.
