Gurdaspur: Gurdaspur police, in coordination with a central agency, claimed on Sunday to have foiled a cross-border arms smuggling module and arrested five persons after a hot pursuit.Aditya, the senior superintendent of police, told mediapersons that police also seized six pistols, including a 9 mm Beretta and a 9 mm Glock, along with 49 live cartridges.The arrested accused include Sukhwinder Singh alias Sukha, Karan Kumar, Balraj Singh alias Buri, Amrik Singh alias Sonu, and Manjinder Singh alias Mangu. Apart from seizing weapons, police teams also impounded a car, the SSP added.Preliminary investigation revealed that the consignment of weapons and ammunition was smuggled from across the border through drones. Further investigation is underway to uncover the network’s backward and forward linkages and identify other persons involved in the cross-border arms smuggling module, Aditya said.He said that, following reliable information, personnel from the Gurdaspur special branch, Dorangla police station, and Behrampur police station spotted a vehicle parked at the intersection near Nurpur Theh village. Two people were sitting outside the vehicle, while three others were inside. On seeing the police, they tried to speed away, but personnel apprehended them after a hot pursuit.A case under Sections 25(8) and 27 of the Arms Act was registered against the accused at Dorangla police station, the SSP added.
