Varanasi: Mau police on Thursday arrested four criminals accused of shooting at a truck driver in an attempt to steal fuel from a truck parked along the Basaratpur highway on the night of Jun 22. The accused were arrested following an encounter. Police recovered country-made pistols, cartridges and two vehicles used in the crime.According to reports, on the intervening night of Jun 22 & 23, the truck driver was resting after parking the vehicle along the Basaratpur highway in Dohrighat area, when criminals on a four-wheeler, made an attempt to steal diesel and when the driver foiled their bid, he was shot at. On the basis of the written complaint, a case against unknown persons was registered under Section 109(1) BNS and investigation began. On Thursday, Doharighat police station inspector in charge was tipped off that some criminals were reaching the area from Ghosi to steal fuel from trucks, and they were the same people who had shot the driver on Jun 22 night.Police were checking vehicles and when an attempt was made to stop the criminals traveling in two vehicles, they fired at the police. In retaliatory action, one criminal was shot in the leg.Police nabbed four criminals, while three others fled. The criminal injured in the crossfire is Upendra Rajbhar (23), resident of Gorakhpur district. The others three were identified as Tripesh Dubey (25), resident of Gorakhpur district, Dheeraj (22), resident of Kanpur district and Nitesh alias Babulal Paswan (25), Gorakhpur district.During interrogation, they identified their accomplices as Aju, Aditya Jaiswal, Krishna Gaund and Monu alias Shyamsurat Paswan, all residents of Gorakhpur district. FIR was registered and investigation is underway.
