Four policemen at Bihar’s Pakribarawan excise police station in Nawada district were arrested on Saturday by Jamui police in connection with an extortion case, police said.

Those arrested were identified as assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) Sujit Kumar and Dilip Kumar, and two home guard jawans, Ravinder Kumar and Gulshan Kumar.

The four were arrested on charges of extorting 1.5 lakh to secure the release of a Jamui youth and his Creta car after he was detained on Thursday for carrying liquor.

A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against them based on a complaint by Pintu Kumar Yadav. He said that his elder brother, Santosh Kumar, left home around 1pm but had not returned by evening.

At 7.30 pm, he received a call from Santosh, who allegedly said he had been abducted and that 5 lakh was being demanded for his release. Yadav, however, handed over 1.5 lakh at the excise police station.

During a raid at ASI Dilip Kumar’s house, police recovered 1.5 lakh in cash.

Jamui Superintendent of Police Vishwajeet Dayal said, “Police is investigating the matter of the role of other persons. We have received many such complaints against the excise police personnel for demanding extortion from innocent people… Strict action will be taken against such people.”
