Chennai: Cash amounting to approximately 34,59,880, being transported without proper documentation, was seized on Tuesday at Virugambakkam and Perambur assembly constituencies by Static Surveillance Teams (SST).In view of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly General Elections – 2026, as per the standard operating procedures of Election Commission of India and the Model Code of Conduct, goods worth more than 10,000 and cash exceeding 50,000 carried without proper documentation are liable to be seized and deposited in the government treasury. If valid documents are later submitted before the Appellate Authority during inquiry, the seized amount or goods will be returned to the rightful person.To monitor such violations, in Chennai district, three flying squad teams (FST) and three static surveillance teams (SST) have been deployed in each Assembly constituency, totaling 48 flying squads and 48 static surveillance teams. These teams function in three shifts and monitor violations of election rules, taking necessary action wherever required.During vehicle checks conducted on Tuesday by static surveillance teams, cash without proper documentation was seized—33,50,000 in Virugambakkam Assembly constituency and 1,09,880 in Perambur Assembly constituency—amounting to a total of 34,59,880. The seized cash has been deposited in the government treasury.
