Chikkamagaluru: The zilla panchayat (ZP) has set out to curb the migration of labourers in search of jobs by effectively implementing the Central govt’s VB G-Ram-G scheme.To create local employment opportunities, the ZP plans to undertake works under four thematic categories. In addition, 318 types of works have been approved under the scheme based on local needs and priorities.With the scheme generating jobs within villages, residents dependent on daily wages will no longer have to travel to distant places in search of employment.The scheme, implemented across all gram panchayats in the district from July 1, guarantees 125 person-days of work to eligible rural families, up from the earlier 100 days. It also focuses on saturation-based comprehensive development of rural areas, said ZP chief executive officer HS Keerthan.The daily wage for rural workers under VBG-RamG has been increased from Rs 370 to Rs 382. Equal wages for men and women will continue. Wages must be credited directly to workers’ bank accounts within 15 days of completion of work. In the event of a delay, compensation will be paid to workers as per the rules.“The wage hike will improve the incomes and living standards of rural workers while contributing to the economic stability of rural families,” Keerthan said.The scheme will cover works under four thematic categories: Water security, basic rural infrastructure, livelihood infrastructure, and climate and disaster mitigation.Under water security, works related to water conservation, rainwater harvesting and development of water resources will be undertaken. Projects involving roads, drains and other essential amenities will be taken up under basic rural infrastructure. The livelihood infrastructure component will focus on creating assets that enhance employment and income-generation opportunities. The climate and disaster mitigation category will include works aimed at reducing the impact of floods, droughts and heavy rainfall, the CEO added.318 types of works approved“A total of 318 types of works have been approved under the scheme based on local needs and priorities. These works will create employment opportunities while developing necessary infrastructure for overall development of villages,” the CEO said.Officials including executive officers, assistant directors, PDOs and technical staff have already been trained by master trainers for effective implementation of the scheme.
