Jaipur: The education department has identified 3,768 school buildings as unsafe for academic activities after a statewide survey found them dilapidated or structurally unfit.Officials said the schools will be rebuilt in phases, with construction of 300 new buildings planned in the first phase. Proposals for rebuilding another 960 schools have been forwarded to NABARD and are awaiting approval, while work on 418 schools is under way under other schemes.“Administrative approval for Rs 409 crore has been secured for constructing new buildings to replace 300 dilapidated structures under the Samagra Shiksha scheme, and technical approval is under process. Till new buildings are ready, a complete ban has been imposed on seating children in unsafe structures or using them for any other purpose,” a senior education department official said.The new school buildings will have well-ventilated classrooms, clean drinking water, separate toilets for boys and girls, facilities for differently abled students, electricity connections and other basic amenities, officials said.The department has also sought approval for the repair and renovation of an additional 2,500 schools at an estimated cost of Rs 550 crore, with the proposal having been forwarded to the state govt. Separately, construction of toilets has been planned in 2,346 schools to improve health and hygiene facilities for girls.“The department is monitoring the entire process regularly to ensure construction is completed on time and facilities are made available to students promptly. Our aim is to ensure that safe schools serve as a medium for the holistic development of students,” the senior official added.Earlier in June, the department had directed officials to reinspect all school buildings across the state, including those identified as unsafe last year, to assess their structural conditions.
