Coimbatore: As many as 28 passengers were injured after a private bus en route to Coimbatore from Tirupur lost control and overturned near Neelambur on Friday morning.Police said the bus with 71 passengers on board was travelling at a high speed. When it got on the Neelambur flyover, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and flip onto its side.The impact of the crash shattered the bus’ windows, leaving trapped passengers panicking and screaming for help. Locals who witnessed the accident rushed to the spot and immediately began rescuing passengers.Meanwhile, on being alerted, police personnel along with fire and rescue services teams rushed to the scene and rescued the passengers. In the impact, 28 passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby private hospitals for treatment. The accident caused a temporary traffic disruption on the busy national highway.“The bus, which has a capacity of 55, was carrying 71 passengers and was travelling at a high speed,” said a police officer. He added that the same bus had been involved in a few other accidents in the last three months, in which two individuals lost their lives.Neelambur police registered a case against the driver identified as Sukumar; and Meganathan, the conductor for over speeding and negligence. Both have since been arrested.
