GURGAON: A 22-year-old man, heading back home with a friend after watching a movie in the early hours of Saturday, died after their car was hit by a truck on Southern Peripheral Road near American Express building in Sector 74. Police said the crash took place around 3.30am as Chirag Sharma, a BA student from Palam Colony in Delhi, and his friend Harsh Sharma were returning home in a Maruti Swift. The truck, police said, was allegedly being driven at high speed and negligently when it rammed into their car in a bid to overtake. Both vehicles were travelling from Vatika Chowk towards Dwarka. According to police, the Swift was struck on the left, in an impact so severe that the car was left mangled and debris from both vehicles was strewn across the road. The truck was also damaged. Police said they are examining the speed of the car as part of the investigation. Chirag and Harsh suffered grievous injuries. Passersby alerted the police control room and rushed them to Artemis Hospital in Sector 51. Harsh died during treatment, while Chirag is battling grievous injuries. Teams from the SPR post and Badshapur police station, who were on night patrol, reached the spot after receiving information from an emergency response vehicle. “By the time we arrived, the damaged truck and car were at the scene, but the injured had already been taken to hospital,” a police officer said. A forensic team also inspected the site. In his complaint, Chirag told police that the two had come to Gurgaon around 9.30pm on Friday to watch a film and were hit by the truck in its attempt to overtake. The truck driver fled after the crash, abandoning the vehicle at the spot. “Both vehicles have been impounded. The body was sent for an autopsy and then handed over to the family. The exact nature of the injuries will be confirmed after the autopsy report, but he had suffered multiple fatal injuries, including one on the head,” an officer said. Based on Chirag’s complaint, a case was registered.
