Thiruvananthapuram: A 22-day-old baby girl was found dead at Nedumangad on Sunday, prompting police to initiate an investigation. The deceased was Shraya, daughter of Bindu, a native of Parandode near Nedumangad.According to police, the infant was fed by her mother on Saturday night and later put to sleep. However, on Sunday morning, family members found the baby unresponsive. She was immediately rushed to Nedumangad govt hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.The baby’s body was subsequently shifted to the mortuary of Nedumangad district hospital and later to govt medical college hospital for postmortem examination. Police said the exact cause of death would be ascertained only after receiving the postmortem report.Sources said the baby’s body was found to have a yellowish discolouration. However, hospital authorities maintained that, at present, there is no indication of foul play or any mystery surrounding the death.Nedumangad police have registered a case under the provisions relating to unnatural death and launched an investigation. Officers said further action, if required, would be taken based on the findings of the postmortem examination and other evidence collected during the probe.“We are examining all aspects related to the incident as part of the investigation, though no suspicious circumstances have been reported so far,” police source said.Following the completion of the postmortem examination, the body was handed over to the relatives. The funeral was later held at the family’s native place in Parandode.
