Chandigarh: The Election Commission has removed nearly 20.66 lakh voters of Punjab from the draft electoral roll published on Thursday, marking the start of the second phase of special intensive revision (SIR).The removals account for 9.63% of the state’s 2.14 crore registered voters, as of June 9, 2026. Over 1.93 crore electors or 90.37% of registered voters submitted forms during the 40-day house-to-house enumeration exercise conducted across all 117 assembly constituencies between June 25 and Aug 3.Of those deleted, the exercise listed 9,44,131 (4.40%) voters as permanently shifted, 5,74,568 (2.68%) as deceased, 4,12,715 (1.92%) as untraceable and 119,145 (.56%) were identified as duplicate entries.Claims and objections regarding the list can be submitted from Aug 13 to Sept 12, with disposal scheduled on Oct 8.Chief electoral officer Anindita Mitra handed over the draft electoral roll to representatives of political parties during a meeting in Chandigarh on Thursday. She also briefed them about prescribed forms: Form 6 for inclusion of names, Form 6a for inclusion of NRI voters, Form 7 for deletion of names and Form 8 for correction of entries or shifting. She said young citizens with the qualifying date of Oct 1, 2026, are eligible for enrolment.The CEO announced a special booth-level camp at all polling booths on Aug 16 to help voters verify their details. Booth level officers will be present at polling stations to offer assistance, she added.
