Mohali: A two-year-old boy, Deva, drowned after rainwater flooded his rented accommodation at a low-lying area in Kharar on Sunday, turning a spell of heavy rain into a tragedy for his family.Sources said the toddler was sleeping on a low cot inside the house when rainwater accumulated and entered the dwelling. His parents were away at work at the time, while three to four other children were present in the house.However, the other children did not notice the danger as the water level rose. By the time they realised what had happened, the child had drowned.On receiving information, police and administrative officials rushed to the spot and launched rescue efforts. However, the child had already died by the time the teams reached the house.His maternal uncle said, “We had gone to Chandigarh for labour work when we received information about his death.”A local resident said the area was flooded within minutes.The incident has highlighted the vulnerability of families living in low-lying and poorly protected dwellings during intense spells of rainfall.The incident occurred amid high-intensity rainfall in Mohali and adjoining areas on Sunday, which led to widespread waterlogging and inundation of several low-lying areas.
