Shillong: The anti-narcotics task force (ANTF), Meghalaya, conducted two operations on Aug 10 in the Umiam area, seizing 32.64 grams of heroin valued at about Rs 5 lakh and arresting two persons.Acting on specific inputs, ANTF teams set up checkpoints to intercept suspected traffickers headed towards Shillong. In the first operation, a vehicle was stopped at Lad Umiam. The occupant, Allan Marwein of Mawlai Nongkwar, Block-13, was searched and one soap case containing suspected heroin was recovered. The substance tested positive, with a net weight of 10.93 grams.Later that night, ANTF intercepted a scooter after it attempted to evade the checkpoint at Umiam. The rider, Jaziel Nongjop Syiem, was detained and searched, and two soap cases containing suspected heroin were recovered from inside his jacket. The substance tested positive, with a total net weight of 21.71 grams.In both cases, the contraband was seized after completing procedures under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and the accused were arrested, ANTF said.Earlier, on Aug 8, a joint ANTF–West Jaintia Hills Police operation at Phramer along NH-06 seized 48.78 grams of heroin valued at about Rs 7 lakh from two people travelling from Silchar to Shillong in a Network Travels bus (ML-05-T-8381). The suspects were identified as Robert Nongrum (33) and Batskhemlang Jarain (32), both Shillong residents. Two plastic soap cases concealed inside a jacket were recovered; the substance tested positive for heroin and weighed 48.78 grams.As of Tuesday, ANTF said it has seized more than 81 grams of heroin in two operations in 72 hours and arrested four accused.
