Mangaluru: Surathkal police Friday arrested two persons and seized 54 grams of MDMA worth Rs 5.4 lakh near a weighbridge at Mukka under Surathkal police station limits.Police acted on credible information that a Kaup resident was arriving in the area to sell MDMA. Based on the tip-off, the PSI of Surathkal police station conducted a raid, where two cars were found parked side by side, DCP (law and order) Mithun HN said.
The arrested are Zakaria, 38, of Kaup, and Mithun Poojary, 23, of Santhekatte in Udupi district.During interrogation, the accused allegedly admitted that they had come to Surathkal to sell the drugs to college students and the general public. Police seized 18.4 grams of MDMA from Zakaria and 36.1 grams from Mithun Poojary, totalling 54 grams. They also seized two cars worth Rs 13 lakh, two mobile phones valued at Rs 20,000, and Rs 11,700 in cash. The total value of the seized property is estimated at Rs 18.7 lakh.Zakaria has a criminal background, with five cases registered against him—assault cases at Bajpe (2009), Mulki (2020), and Padubidri (2022) police stations; an assault case involving a woman in 2022; and a kidnapping case at Udupi Town Police Station in 2021.A case has been registered at Surathkal police station, and investigation is under way.
