Varanasi: A 20-year-old and his juvenile aide were arrested after an exchange of fire with Bilariyaganj police personnel in Azamgarh district early Tuesday morning. The duo had snatched the purse of a woman who was commuting on an e-rickshaw on May 23. The 20-year-old accused was identified as Fuzail Ahmad.Azamgarh ASP (rural) Chirag Jain said that during night patrol, Bilariyaganj police were alerted and they cordoned off Naseerpur canal road to intercept the motorcycle-borne miscreants. On finding themselves encircled by policemen, they opened fire at the police team and tried to take a U-turn in a bid to flee but in retaliatory action by police, Fuzail Ahmad suffered bullet injury in the leg and was caught.Police also held the juvenile and after recovering a country-made pistol, cartridges, mobile phone, a ladies bag, Rs 9,800 cash and the motorcycle, rushed Fuzail Ahmad to the district Hospital.On May 23, a woman resident of Mahajbeen of Rasoolpur was going home by e-rickshaw from Bilriyaganj market when Fuzail and his accomplice snatched her purse containing cash and a mobile phone and fled. On examining CCTV footage, police ascertained the identity of the thief and launched a manhunt for him.
