Shillong: In a significant progress in the history of cancer prevention in Meghalaya, for the first-time ever, human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cervical pre-cancer treatment through thermal ablation has been successfully performed at the DAE Cancer Wing, Civil Hospital, Shillong.The procedure was conducted by the doctors and nurses along with the dedicated team of Meghalaya Mission Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Project team, Civil Hospital Shillong, on May 13 .“This achievement signifies a major advancement in strengthening cervical cancer prevention services within the public healthcare system of Meghalaya,” a health official underscored.The patient was detected positive for HPV DNA Genotype 11 on March 31, 2026. Following appropriate clinical evaluation, counselling, and assessment, the patient was successfully treated and declared free of cancer.
