Prayagraj: A 17-year-old gang rape survivor allegedly died by suicide at her house in Chitrakoot district on Tuesday evening, police said. The girl was allegedly raped by three youths on March 4 when she went to fetch water from a well.Police claimed that the family did not lodge a complaint at that time to avoid social stigma. The accused were, however, threatening the girl with dire consequences if the family lodged a police complaint, which compelled the girl to take the extreme step. Now, on the complaint of the girl’s father, police have lodged an FIR under various sections of BNS, Section 3/4 of the Pocso Act and Section 3(1) and 3(2)5 of the SC/ST Act against the three accused of the same village who are at large. Two of the accused hail from the SC community. The father told police that on the fateful day, the girl went to fetch water but did not return for a long time. When his younger son went looking for her, he found her in a dishevelled state in a field. The family, however, chose not to inform the police immediately. The father alleged that the three accused dragged the girl forcibly into a field and gang raped her for more than two hours. He added that the accused were constantly passing disgraceful remarks about his daughter and, fed up with this insult, she died by suicide. However, Chitrakoot police claimed that cops on March 4 asked the parents to provide a written statement to lodge the FIR, but they refused. The parents even provided a video statement stating they did not want any action in the case.No action was taken after their video statement, and cops even noted it in the GD (general diary) available at the police station. Cops also claimed that there were no complaints or issues from the parents’ side for the past 38 days.A diary belonging to the girl was recovered from the house during the investigation.A senior cop told TOI: “A detailed probe has been ordered into the incident and action will be initiated. Three police teams have been formed to nab the culprits. If any negligence was found on the part of the police, action will be initiated.”
