Nagpur: Towering over an artificial lake at revered Shri Mahalaxmi Jagdamba Temple in Koradi, the much-awaited 162ft Lord Hanuman idol has finally been completed, marking a major milestone in the ambitious redevelopment of one of Vidarbha’s most prominent pilgrimage destinations. With finishing touches now underway, the colossal structure is likely to be inaugurated in October, with union home minister Amit Shah expected to preside over, according to sources.Meanwhile, the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA), has begun planning to transform the site into a major tourism destination. A 7 crore tender has been floated for a laser and light show around the artificial lake, aiming to create a spectacular visual experience.Standing 162ft high atop a 40ft foundation constructed in the lake taking it to 202ft height, the monument is being touted as one of the tallest Hanuman idols in the country. Interestingly, the original plan envisaged a 151ft idol, but the design was later revised, increasing its height to 162ft, making it an imposing landmark in city’s skyline.Officials said the main construction of the idol has been completed and only finishing works, including staircases, tiling, landscaping and other beautification works, are in progress. The Hanuman idol itself has been constructed at a cost of around 11.50 crore and forms a key component of the 214.94 crore redevelopment project of the historic Koradi temple complex under phases III and IV. NMRDA, under commissioner Sanjay Meena, had earlier completed phases I and II and is currently executing the remaining works aimed at upgrading the temple precinct into a world-class religious and tourism destination.The artificial lake and foundation for the monument were developed by Mahagenco, while NMRDA supervised construction of the idol through a Delhi-based firm specialising in large-scale statues and monumental sculptures. The contract for the idol was awarded in July 2023.The idea of installing a giant Hanuman idol here was first conceived by Congress MLA Nitin Raut when he was the state’s energy minister.
