Nagpur: With temperatures rising sharply, MahaMetro has stepped up on-ground measures to safeguard workers under its ‘Heat Action Plan – 2026′, currently being implemented across multiple construction sites of the ongoing metro phase 2 project. As part of the plan, earthen pots filled with cool drinking water have been installed at nearly 150 locations, while around 200 umbrellas have been erected to provide shade at worksites. The initiative extends to traffic marshals as well, aiming to ensure continuity of operations without compromising safety amid extreme heat conditions. Officials said work schedules are being reorganised to reduce exposure during peak afternoon hours. Tasks are being split between hotter and relatively cooler periods of the day, with a rotational system in place to help workers acclimatise. Heavy and physically demanding activities are being prioritised during early morning or late evening hours. To further mitigate risks, shaded rest zones have been created at sites, allowing workers to take periodic breaks. ORS (oral rehydration solution) and other fluids are being distributed regularly to prevent dehydration and heatstroke. Workers are being advised to hydrate at intervals of 15 to 20 minutes, with drinking water made accessible close to all work areas. MahaMetro has also introduced a ‘buddy system’, under which workers monitor each other for early signs of heat stress or exhaustion, enabling quicker response in case of emergencies. Training sessions are being conducted to help workers identify symptoms of heat-related illnesses and take immediate action. In addition, information boards have been installed at worksites and rest areas to guide workers on hydration levels using urine colour indicators, along with general heat safety measures. Cooling facilities have also been arranged at rest shelters and labour accommodation camps. Officials maintained that these interventions are aimed at maintaining both worker well-being and project efficiency. The corporation indicated that such measures will continue to be strengthened in the coming months as part of its broader commitment to workplace safety during extreme weather conditions.
