Chennai: Fifteen new judges assumed office at Madras high court on Sunday, with Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari administering the oath of office to them, at a ceremony held on the court premises.Judges K Govindarajan, Rajnish Pathiyil, Natarajan Ramesh, GK Muthukumaar, Ramakrishnan Rajesh Vivekananthan, Sankaranarayanan Raveekumar, Nagarajan Dilip Kumar, Ellappan Manoharan, P Murugan, MD Sumathi, Shanmugam Karthikeyan, Baluchamy Murugesan, N Gunasekaran, S Alli and Thirumagal Chandrasekar assumed office on the occasion.The union govt had notified their appointments on Friday. The appointments were made after the Supreme Court and Madras high court collegiums recommended candidates for appointment to the high court.The new appointments come at a time when Madras HC was functioning with only 51 judges against its sanctioned strength of 75.The swearing-in ceremony marks the formal commencement of their tenure on the Madras High Court Bench. The appointments include both advocates and judicial officers, with the Centre notifying the appointments as part of a larger exercise covering four High Courts.Across the country, the Union government notified the appointment of 30 judges to the Madras, Calcutta, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh High Courts, with Madras receiving the highest number of appointments at 15.
