Nagpur: Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Thursday demolished 15 houses in the Symbiosis College area of Dighori as part of an anti-encroachment drive to clear land allotted to Sports Authority of India (SAI).NMC’s encroachment removal department, in coordination with the Nehru Nagar zone, deployed three JCB machines and a heavy police bandobast for the action at Khasra No. 60 in Mouza Dighori. As the demolition squad arrived, residents protested the move.The demolition was carried out against 16 pucca houses for which notices had reportedly been issued by the Nehru Nagar zone office. However, action against one house was halted after the owner’s husband, Gulshan Khatun, suddenly fell ill. He was shifted to a private hospital by ambulance for treatment. NMC subsequently demolished the remaining 15 houses.The land at Khasra No. 60 has been allotted for Sports Authority of India, and the civic administration had initiated the process to clear encroachments from the site.Residents protested the demolition, alleging that they had neither received notices nor been given prior information to vacate their houses.Nehru Nagar zone assistant municipal commissioner Anuj Kopulwar and civic officials showed the residents notices issued by NMC. However, the residents remained dissatisfied and continued their protest.
