Nagpur: Driving licences of 141 drivers were cancelled or suspended for around three months after the Nagpur Rural Police traffic branch submitted around 2,500 proposals for such actions against repeat offenders to the Regional Transport Office (RTO). The process is underway at RTO in the remaining cases.A comprehensive review by the traffic branch revealed many individuals repeatedly committed offences like exceeding speed limits, jumping red signals, overloading vehicles beyond permitted capacity, driving under the influence of alcohol, and other serious infractions. Such violations contribute to increase in road accidents in the rural areas. Police forwarded a detailed proposal to the RTO, recommending action against 2,494 drivers who were identified through e-challan records and repeated offences. . “The initiative is expected to serve as a deterrent and promote greater discipline on roads and highways in Nagpur’s rural areas,” said an official.The crackdown aligns with broader national efforts to deter reckless driving through stricter penalties, including licence suspensions for habitual violators. Rural SP Harssh Poddar told TOI, “A majority of these cases involve overspeeding, which remains the leading cause of fatalities in Nagpur rural. There was a need to send a strong message to curb this trend. We identified offenders with three or more repeated violations and forwarded their details for action. This is only Phase 1 of the drive, and more such measures will follow.”“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Repeated violations not only invite severe penalties but also put innocent lives at risk,” a police spokesperson stated. Rural police authorities have assured that strict enforcement will continue with regular monitoring of e-challans, surprise checks, and coordination with the RTO to identify and penalise offenders promptly.
