T’puram: A 14-year-old boy’s misadventure nearly turned tragic in Thiruvananthapuram after the car he was driving plunged into a ditch in the early hours of Friday. Moreover, he had allegedly locked his parents inside their house in Kannammoola before setting off for the ill-fated drive with his 17-year-old friend.

The incident occurred around 2am on the Karamana-Thampanoor stretch near Karamana Old Bridge. The car broke through a roadside railing and fell several feet into a ditch before overturning. Despite the impact, both boys escaped without serious injuries and managed to climb back onto the road on their own. Police from the Karamana station reached the spot soon after and shifted the boys to a nearby private hospital for examination. Their injuries were reported to be minor. The parents came to know about the incident only after being informed by the police. A case has been registered against the boy’s mother, who is the vehicle’s registered owner, under relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for allowing a minor to drive and endangering public safety. Police said the boys had driven the car through several parts of the city before the crash. Officials also noted a rise in recent incidents involving minors taking vehicles without parental knowledge, raising concerns over supervision and road safety. “We have registered a case against the registered owner of the vehicle for allowing a minor to drive and endangering public safety. The incident could have turned drastic for both the boys and the public,” a senior police official said.
