Prayagraj: In one of the biggest narcotics destruction drives in Yamunanagar area, Prayagraj Police destroyed 1,115.95 kg of seized cannabis worth an estimated Rs 5.58 crore under its anti-drug campaign, ‘Operation Dahan’, on Saturday.The destruction was carried out by joint teams of the Narcotics Task Force (Crime Branch), Naini police and Industrial Area police in the presence of a high-level committee constituted by the police commissioner to ensure compliance with the provisions of the NDPS Act and related guidelines.Of the total quantity destroyed, 892.85 kg was seized in cases registered at Naini police station, while 223.10 kg was recovered by the Industrial Area police. Police said the contraband, estimated to be worth Rs 5.57 crore in the illegal market, was seized during earlier operations against drug traffickers and the accused were arrested.The seized material was sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for examination, which confirmed it to be cannabis. Following completion of investigation, chargesheets were filed before the court.Police said due legal procedure was completed before the court for disposal of the seized narcotics, after which permission for destruction was obtained from UP DGP and IG of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force.The destruction process, carried out at a Pollution Control Board-approved facility, lasted nearly six hours under tight security. Officials said the entire operation was conducted under the supervision of the high-level committee to ensure transparency and strict adherence to legal provisions governing the disposal of seized narcotic substances.
