Srinagar, Feb 12: The Government on Thursday informed the Assembly that 108 electric buses are currently operational in the Jammu region as part of efforts to shift toward clean and modern public transport.
In a written reply to question tabled by MLA Arvind Gupta, the Transport Department said that 100 e buses deployed by the Housing and Urban Development Department under the Smart City project are running in Jammu.
It added that the Jammu and Kashmir Road Transport Corporation has deployed 20 electric buses in the region, of which eight are operational while the rest are under maintenance.
The Government said it is taking steps to reduce dependence on conventional buses and intermediate modes of transport by promoting electric mobility and an integrated urban transport system.
Officials said the Housing and Urban Development Department has also introduced electric buses in Jammu city to promote clean and sustainable mobility. An Intelligent Transport System is being implemented, which includes GPS based vehicle tracking, real time passenger information systems, and command and control centres for better traffic management.
