Aizawl: The 21st annual conference of the Association of Oncologists of Northeast India (AONEI), hosted by the Mizoram State Cancer Institute (MSCI) at the Aijal Club in Aizawl and attended by over 100 healthcare experts across the country, was inaugurated by state health minister Lalrinpuii on Friday night.Lalrinpuii said while Mizoram has the highest incidence of cancer in the entire country, the state and the northeast region, according to several reports under the National Cancer Registry Programme is also known for having high incidence of different types of cancer, including esophageal cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer and cervical cancer. She expressed hope that the conference will bring positive results in the cancer scenario of the state and the region.Narrating Mizoram govt’s efforts to check high incidence of cancer, she said works have commenced for setting up of the Mizoram State Super-Specialty Cancer & Research Centre at Zemabawk neighbourhood in Aizawl with financial assistance of Rs 700 crore from the Japan International Cooperation Agency under which bone marrow transplant and different nuclear medicine facilities, including PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scan and several cancer tests can be conducted.Over 100 healthcare experts from all over the country are attending the three-day conference.Experts, including Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi, director, Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), Mumbai, Dr Dodul Mondal, radiation oncologist, Max Hospital, Delhi, Dr Mohammed Imaduddin, surgical oncologist, Cion Cancer Clinics, Hyderabad, and Dr Harikrishna Kovilapu, Medical Oncologist, CMC, Vellore will give presentations during the conference.
