Ludhiana: A local court has sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for violently assaulting a woman and snatching her gold earrings in March 2021. The court of additional sessions judge Rajneesh also imposed a total fine of Rs 26,0-00 on the convict, Dharminder Singh of Salanha Bet in Machhiwara, ordering that a failure to pay will extend his rigorous confinement by an additional six months and one week.The incident occurred on March 10, 2021, at around 11.15 am when the victim, Kuldeep Kaur, was walking along an unpaved path from Kotala Bet toward the gurudwara in Majri Sikhaan village. The convict approached her from behind on a motorcycle, grabbed her by the throat, and attempted to rip off her gold earrings.When the victim resisted, Dharminder grappled with her, threw her to the ground, and repeatedly punched her on the nose while pinning her down by the throat and chest. The victim suffered physical injuries to her body and right elbow during the struggle. Although her daughter-in-law (also named Kuldeep Kaur) rushed to the spot upon hearing her cries for help, the assailant managed to speed away on his motorcycle.The victim received initial medical aid the following day and was subsequently admitted to the Civil Hospital in Samrala due to escalating bodily pain. She later positively identified Dharminder Singh as the attacker, and his motorcycle registration number was traced as PB10BA1975.Following the initial complaint, the Machhiwara Sahib police registered an FIR under Section 379 B (2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for snatching accompanied by hurt or wrongful restraint. During the subsequent police investigation, the team successfully recovered both the snatched gold earrings and the offending motorcycle from the accused’s possession.Although the accused pleaded false implication during the trial, the court rejected his defense after reviewing the evidence. The judge ruled that the prosecution conclusively proved that the accused caused physical hurt to the complainant, robbed her property, and was caught in direct possession of the stolen items.
