Bokaro: A baby weighing just 1.3 kg, who was suffering from respiratory distress and other complications soon after birth, was discharged from Sadar Hospital, Bokaro, on Monday after sustained care and treatment, doctors said.The baby boy is one of twins born to Laxmi Devi and Sona Ram of Bhaski on June 15. The family first approached a private hospital but, unable to afford the cost of treatment, was shifted to Sadar Hospital, where he was admitted to the special newborn care unit (SNCU) on June 20.Deputy commissioner Ajay Nath Jha said the infant received round-the-clock medical supervision, specialised treatment, kangaroo mother care (KMC) and support for exclusive breastfeeding. With sustained care by doctors and nurses and cooperation from the family, the newborn’s condition improved steadily.During treatment, his weight rose from 1.3 kg to 1.5 kg and his breathing difficulties disappeared. Dr R K Das, part of the treatment team, said timely expert care, continuous monitoring, KMC and exclusive breastfeeding can help low-weight newborns recover.The SNCU, guided by civil surgeon Dr Abhay Bhushan Prasad and supervised by the hospital deputy superintendent, advised continued breastfeeding, KMC and regular follow-up visits as scheduled after discharge.
