Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee claimed on Wednesday that at least 1.2 crore names will be deleted in the name of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bengal and wondered how many people will make it to the final rolls to be published by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on February 28.

“At least 80 lakh names must have been deleted under logical discrepancies while 58 lakh names were deleted earlier. If we exclude the 20 lakh dead voters, the total number of deletions will stand at 1.2 crore as on February 28,” Banerjee said. The chief minister was referring to the 58 lakh names which were deleted following the draft roll publication. She was speaking at a programme in Bhabanipur constituency, where she inaugurated several projects virtually.

“Initially, 58 lakh names were deleted. Then, in a clandestine manner, in the name of logical discrepancies, 1.2 crore names were deleted. There were no such rules,” Banerjee claimed.
Banerjee said she was saddened that many have lost their voting rights due to SIR and prayed that people, whose names were deleted despite having all documents, would get justice and hoped that truth would prevail.

She said Bhabanipur (her constituency) is like a mini-India where people of all religions, castes, creed and states stay. Banerjee inaugurated the ‘Manstambha’ Jain temple and laid foundation stone for projects worth Rs 850 crore, including various state government projects, a mother-child hub and hospital.
