Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited has initiated legal action against Jiostar India Private Limited in the Delhi High Court, alleging unauthorised use of its copyrighted sound recordings across digital platforms and satellite television channels.
“We hereby inform you that the Company has initiated litigation proceedings against Jiostar India Private Limited, concerning infringement of its music copyrights,” Zee Entertainment said in its exchange filing.
In a regulatory filing on Thursday, Zee Entertainment said it has filed a commercial suit alleging that Jiostar continued to use its music content even after the expiry of the licence agreement between the two parties, including agreements entered into by Zee’s predecessor entities.
According to the disclosure made under Regulation 30 of the SEBI Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements (LODR) Regulations, the suit relates to alleged infringement across Jiostar’s digital platforms and broadcast channels. Zee has claimed damages of approximately ₹28.75 crore for infringing instances identified before the filing of the suit.
The company noted that the quantum of damages could increase if additional infringing instances are discovered during the course of adjudication. Zee said it expects to receive damages, subject to the outcome of the litigation.
