Margao: Leader of the Opposition and Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao on Tuesday gave the govt a 10-day ultimatum to cancel the consent to establish and operate granted by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to a new fish meal unit at Cuncolim Industrial Estate, warning of a mass agitation. The ultimatum followed a march by residents to his office against the Board’s decision. “We gave an ultimatum to the BJP govt to withdraw the Consent to Operate within 10 days. If govt fails, we will launch a massive agitation. This insensitive and corrupt govt will be responsible for any law and order situation,” Alemao said.He termed the approval “a case of corruption”, alleging cronyism. Alemao also raised health concerns, saying fish meal plants lack effluent treatment and odour control. Resident Aviraj Dessai alleged 80% of units cause pollution, damaging fields and contaminating wells.
