Having received the initial support of ₹10 crore from the Government of Tamil Nadu recently for hosting the WTA 250 Chennai Open international women’s tennis championship to be held here from November 2 to 8, the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA) is confident of securing the remaining sponsorship for the tournament.
TNTA president Vijay Amritraj said at a press conference here on Friday that almost all the corporates that had supported the tournament in the past had come forward again to back the event in its third year.
“I am proud to announce the fact that pretty much most of the sponsors that we’ve had alongside the Government of Tamil Nadu for the last couple of years have also given us the support to come back,” said the 72-year-old while profusely thanking the State’s Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay for supporting tennis.
The Chennai Open, will have, for the first time, an electronic line calling technology in all the courts—Centre Court and the three outside courts. Last year, Hawk Eye was employed only at the Centre Court. Amritraj said talks are on to get “two to four world’s top-50 players this time.”
Sandeep Nanduri, Secretary, Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, assured complete support to TNTA in hosting a successful tournament. “We are very happy that the event is being jointly organised with TNTA and whatever support is required, our SDAT-Nungambakkam stadium will be geared up,” he said. Nanduri insisted that Government is trying to get the men’s ATP 250 event back to the State. “…..We are also aiming to bring the ATP 250 event [back] also to Tamil Nadu. I am sure TNTA will support that dream of our department,” he said.
