Ranchi: Two workers died after a dilapidated overhead water tank collapsed near Zila School under Kotwali police station limits on Wednesday evening, with one body recovered late at night after a nearly six-hour rescue operation by multiple agencies.The deceased have been identified as Maithli Sharan Mahto, 42, a resident of Palamu district, and Satya Bhuiyan, 35.Mahto’s body was recovered around 11pm on Wednesday after he remained trapped under the debris. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel were pressed into action to retrieve the body.“After receiving information from the district administration, we arrived at the spot and retrieved the body within 25 minutes. It was trapped under a concrete slab and was handed over to police,” said Md Saleem Rayeem, commandant of NDRF’s 9th battalion.Bhuiyan was recovered by police soon after the overhead tank collapsed around 5.30pm on Wednesday. He was taken to Rims, where doctors declared him dead.DWSD’s executive engineer Sumit Kumar said that a departmental inquiry to ascertain whether any safety lapses claimed the lives of the workers has been initiated.
