Mangaluru: City police arrested a labourer within 24 hours for allegedly stealing gold jewellery and a gold-coated watch worth Rs 6.4 lakh from a house where he had been engaged in renovation work. The accused has been identified as Zaheeruddin,24, a native of Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh.City police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy CH stated that repair work, including replacing the roof of a room at the rear of a house and installing a false ceiling in the hall, was carried out by a mason and assistant labourers at a house in Bandottu, Maryhill, from the first week of July.On July 16, the family discovered that a 20g gold bangle, a 17g gold chain, an 8g gold ring, a 4g gold ring, and a gold-coated watch, kept in a small purse inside a table drawer, had been stolen. The total value of the stolen property was estimated at Rs 6.4 lakh. Based on the complaint, Mangaluru Rural police registered a case under Section 305 of the BNS.During investigation police thoroughly questioned the workers engaged in the renovation. Zaheeruddin, who is currently residing on Azizuddin Road, Bunder, allegedly confessed to the theft. The stolen gold ornaments and the watch were recovered from him .The accused was produced before a court, which remanded him in judicial custody.The case was cracked by a team from Mangaluru Rural police station led by police inspector DR Manjappa and police sub-inspector Arun Kumar D.
