Mangaluru: Several women’s organisations have backed the Karnataka health department’s ‘Ruthuthaare’ programme, saying its focus on menstrual health, perimenopause and menopause awareness can help women navigate key stages of their lives. Mamatha Gatti, chairperson of the Karnataka Cashew Development Corporation (KCDC), praised the initiative and said it seeks to dispel deep-rooted superstitions, myths and stigma surrounding menstruation by providing scientific information.The programme also advocates eco-friendly sanitary alternatives such as menstrual cups and educates women on navigating the physical, mental and emotional changes associated with menopause. Gatti said the major initiative, spearheaded by health and family welfare minister UT Khader, will be instrumental in creating widespread awareness. She noted that the programme will address growing concerns regarding the early onset of menstruation in young girls.“There is a need to provide adequate support to girls during their menstrual cycle. Besides promoting sanitary pads, the programme should build awareness around eco-friendly options like menstrual cups to help women make informed hygiene choices,” she suggested.Mahila Okkuta honorary president Vijayalakshmi Shetty said women should be provided with proper information about physical and emotional changes associated with menopause, including hot flashes, sleep problems and mood swings. She stressed that women should also be encouraged to seek medical advice in such situations.Mahila Okkuta president Chanchalakshi Tejomaya said ensuring women’s health, dignity, safety and confidence from adolescence through menopause is a shared responsibility. She insisted that parents, educators, healthcare professionals and society must unite to foster open, scientific discussions on menstrual and women’s health.
