Gurgaon: A 22-year-old man and his wife, also 22, drowned in Gurgaon canal near Jaisinghpur village under the Sadar police station area of Nuh on Thursday, police said on Friday, adding that the couple had gone for a walk near the canal.The deceased were identified as Sadik and Hansira, who married six months ago and were residents of the village. Police said that Hansira’s foot slipped and she fell into the canal first. “In an attempt to save her, Sadik jumped in, but both were swept away by the strong current,” an officer said.
Police said the incident occurred around 6:30 pm and police were alerted at 7:20 pm. The officer added that one person saw the two drown, after which more people came to try and rescue them. Police teams reached the spot and initiated an investigation. The bodies were later handed over to family members, and the last rites were performed. Police said the case was registered as an accidental death, and inquest proceedings were undertaken under section 194 of BNSS.
