Rourkela: A 27-year-old woman, who was set on fire allegedly by a man after she rejected his marriage proposal, succumbed to burn injuries at a private hospital here on Tuesday night. Local Bisra police have converted an attempt to murder case against accused Rajat Kiro (28) into a murder case.Kiro (28), a resident of Kinjrikela police station area in Sundargarh district, has been in jail since his arrest on June 28.Based on an FIR, Bisra police registered an attempted murder case on June 27 and began an investigation. After Toppo died on Tuesday, police sent the body for postmortem and later handed it over to the family. “After the death of the woman in the hospital, we have turned the attempt to murder case against the accused into a murder case. The accused is in jail now. We will take further action accordingly,” said Manoranjan Kumbhar, inspector-in charge, Bisra police station.Police said victim Anju Toppo (27) was sleeping at her house in Jaratola village under Santoshpur panchayat under Bisra police station limits on June 26, when around 11.30 pm, the accused allegedly poured petrol into her room through a window and set it on fire. Hearing her cries, family members and local residents rescued her and rushed her to Rourkela Government Hospital. She was later shifted to a private hospital with over 40% burn injuries.According to police, Kiro had come in contact with Toppo on social media about eight months ago and proposed marriage.
