Ludhiana: A local councillor apprehended a woman with ‘narcotics’ in Sanjay Gandhi Colony and accused her of drug peddling. However the police released her without lodging an FIR, which fumed the residents.The controversy surfaced after a video showing the woman being apprehended with suspected contraband went viral on social media on Saturday. The woman was reportedly caught by a local councillor along with residents, who claimed that 10 to 15 packets of heroin were recovered from her possession.Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) councillor from Ward Number 20, Chatarveer Singh alias Kamal Arora, caught the woman with the help of residents and recovered about 10-15 packets of ‘drugs’. She was caught during Facebook live. The video of the incident also went viral. According to the councillor, on Friday night, residents informed him about the woman of allegedly selling drugs in the locality. Acting on the information, he, along with locals, laid a trap and caught her. The incident was also recorded on video.He further alleged that the same woman had been caught earlier and warned, but she continued her activities. The woman was handed over to the police along with statements seeking legal action. However, no FIR was registered, and she was released shortly afterwards.When contacted, SHO Gagandeep Singh said the woman was a drug addict and was released on responsibility, adding that action would follow after verification.Deputy Commissioner of Police Jaskiranjit Singh Teja said the police will re-check the matter and will take action accordingly.
