Chandigarh: A 60-year-old woman died after a speeding car, allegedly driven by a Punjab Police head constable under the influence of alcohol, rammed into her scooter near the Sector 33/34 traffic lights here on Sunday night. The accused has been arrested, and a case of rash and negligent driving causing death has been registered.The deceased, Kuldeep Kaur, was a resident of Sector 52, Chandigarh. Police identified the accused as Kulwant Singh, a resident of Gurdaspur, posted as a head constable in the IRB unit of Punjab Police.Based on a complaint by the victim’s husband, Balbir Singh, police at Sector 34 police station initiated proceedings. He told police that the couple had gone to Baba Balak Nath Temple in Sector 29 and were returning home on their scooter when the accident occurred around 8.30 pm near the Sector 33/34 light point.According to the complaint, a car approaching from behind at high speed allegedly hit their scooter with force, throwing Kuldeep Kaur onto the road. The complainant alleged that the driver failed to control the vehicle after the collision and the car ran over her, causing severe injuries.Passersby rushed to the spot and shifted her to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, where doctors later declared her dead during treatment.Police said the accused stopped at the scene after the accident. During investigation, he was found to be allegedly under the influence of alcohol, and Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act has also been invoked. Further investigation is underway.
